A different kind of sweet basil; the Dark Opal

Sweet basil is widely known for its scented leaves and for its culinary use. One cultivar you can grow as either an ornamental plant or for kitchen use is the Dark Opal. Its purple-dark leaves are its main attraction along with its tiny tubular blooms which rise above its foliage. Dark Opal has been used in dishes like salads and pastas, while some use it to create certain sauces. A great addition if you have a herb garden, the Dark Opal thrives on a full sun but always remember to give them enough water specially during the hot weather.
