If you have trees that has decaying wood and you see saprophytes on it, you're looking at a fungal disease called nectria canker. If often attacks trees that are improperly pruned, damaged roots and woods. You can spot these disease as fruit-like spots on twigs and branches and can eventually kill a specific tree if left untreated. Unfortunately, treatment is highly impossible but prevention can always be done specially on the part wherein you should exercise proper pruning.
