Giant hogweed is a phototoxic, meaning it contains furocoumarins, especially in its sap. When skin is exposed to furocoumarins in combination with bright sunshine, painful sores and blisters can result. Many an unwary gardener clearing an overgrown allotment plot on a hot day has been burned by one or other of these plants. On that case, giant hogweed is included in the official list of dangerous plants after young children suffered “severe blistering” from exposure to the plant.
