They are clump-forming and a rhizomatous perennial producing whorls of egg-shaped, prominently-veined, green leaves handsomely marbled with silver, and they are called Little Sweet Betsy. Stalkless and rich maroon flowers appear starting in spring and each blossom has 3 maroon petals subtended by 3 smaller green sepals. The flowers may also be pale brown, clear green or even yellow, and they emit a sweet but faint fragrance reminiscent of bananas. They're excellent when massed in shaded woodland gardens, naturalized areas or wildflower gardens.
