An airy, deciduous shrub with slender stems is the American Strawberry Bush, which is highly prized for its very ornamental fruits and attractive fall color. Its foliage turns subtle shades of orange-red in the fall while a profusion of pale green flowers with clawed petals and purple stamens bloom from the leaf axils during late spring. Dangling on slender peduncles, each seed capsule splits open to reveal pea-sized, bright orange-red berries, which are attractive to birds and small mammals and are a great source of fat and sugar for them. They're also good for naturalizing and great for woodland gardens or as a specimen plant.
