One of the common dye ingredients is the madder (rubia tinctorum), a perennial plant which is relative of the coffee and bedstraw family. Red dye is the most common product of the madder, which has been used in leather, wool, cotton and silk. Madder can be grown from seed and place it indoors for a couple of weeks before transplanting. Of course, a full sun is one of their growing requirements as well as soil with good drainage, from sandy to loamy.
