Winter is a season wherein most plants are dormant and it's a perfect time to do some pruning. It's a worthwhile activity to do specially when these plants are in their ‘inactive' state, that's the time you do a little haircut. You should cut out those diseased or dead branches specially on deciduous trees, or remove some branches that are entangled with other branches. If you happen to be done with that, thinning should be the next as you'll be pruning those overgrown branches in order for the tree to receive air and sunlight.
