They're called ‘elephant ear' simply because of their big leaves that resembles that of the ears of the elephant. This plant are mostly grown as pot plant and houseplant these days. Since they're considered a tropical plant, you can also grow them during winter but you should be knowledgeable on how to overwinter them.
